We are a local tenants and residents association covering a small local housing estate (the Tantany) located in West Bromwich, Sandwell. The name ‘Sandwell’ might be more familiar to you if you live outside the borough as ‘The Black Country’ – the industrial heartland of England in the West Midlands. Traditionally the area has been associated with the industrial revolution, industry and mining being the traditional local employers. Times have changed however, and the image and economic base of Sandwell has shifted over the past decades.
The Tantany Tenants & Residents Association (TRA) initially started up in 1999. Back then TRA’s where just starting to become established in Sandwell, and where being instigated by joint partnership work between the local authority Sandwell MBC and the old Sandwell Tenants & Residents Federation (now known as Sandwell Community Information & Participation Service Ltd, or SCIPS). The first meeting we organised was well attended by local residents, and the group evolved from this small beginning.
In the intervening years we have grown in confidence, knowledge and ambition and are responsible for initiating a number of key projects for our estate.
The Committee currently meets on the 2 nd Tuesday of each month at the local Baptist Church on Tantany Lane. We pride ourselves in being an open and democratic group, always willing to welcome new people on board and to listen and support the voice of the local community. Listening to this community voice is extended to our young people who are growing up on the estate, and helping to secure services and opportunities that should be the right of all young people in our society today.
We receive general running cost funding through Sandwell Homes the local Arms Length Management Organisation set up by the local Council to manage council housing in the borough . As a constituted group we are also able to access other funding when required for the delivery of specific projects for the benefit of all the local community.
If you live in our local area and would like to get actively involved with the group please contact us in the first instance through the contacts section here on our website. |
